Breath – day 1: the Brel/Momus connection

Hello and welcome to Breath day 1.

Two songs today. One is a straight cover, the other has a bit of cover, a bit of new writing.

Christmas on Earth

This is a cover from the relatively obscure but incredibly accomplished singer/songwriter Momus. I’ve loved its melody since I first heard it on his 1993 album Timelord.

In 2018 I made a video for it. It was mid-December so it was a bit of a rush! I huddled in the hall cupboard in the dark to get some footage of me miming and added it to some stock footage of space. In the end I was quite pleased with it. See what you think …

Ricky

When I play this live I introduce it as co-written with two people who don’t know they co-wrote it with me. One because he’s dead – the late great Jacques Brel and the other because I adapted his adaptation of it. So Brel wrote Jackie, Momus (real name Nick Currie) wrote Nicky and I wrote Ricky.

Well that’s day 1. I hope you’ll join me tomorrow for three more songs
