For a few years now I’ve been playing Robin Williamson’s Zoo Blues in my solo set and challenging people to spot all the animal puns in it. In a way it seems perverse – Robin’s written so many beautiful and spiritual songs both in his Incredible String Band days and since. If you’re going to cover a Robin song why this one?
Well, because it’s fun. It was written by Robin and his Merry Band to amuse themselves on long van journeys between gigs in the late 70s. How many animal puns could they squeeze into a song?
Can you spot them all?
Here, from the Orchy Sessions, is the answer. Since I’ve been playing it I’ve taken some out and added some more. If you don’t get them all first time, stay tuned!

I absolute love this, Norman. So skilfully performed, remembering and singing all those puns so rapidly with great timing – as well as being incredibly entertaining and funny! 😀 Thank you!
Thanks David, glad you enjoyed it. It took me a while to memorise but once I did I was able to play with the timing and really enjoy myself.
