I had a rather insipid ‘rock’ version of this that I’d done at home. I had the guitar riff, the melody and some words. I asked Graeme if he’d like to work on it and took it up to his attic studio. I made up the remainder of the words on the spot, feeling like there was a story there if I could just see it.
In one day, he went through it like a force of nature, adding power wherever he touched it. Watching him adding lead guitar tracks as if he was onstage was mental. Then, after I’d gone home, he went on building it up, choirs and towering stacks of keyboards. The nearest I’ll ever have to the E Street Band.
